Former Roma defender in Malta
Nela meets fans at Eurosport store
Sebastiano Nela was surprised by the warmth of the Maltese fans who visited the Eurosport stores in Birkirkara yesterday to meet the former Italy and Roma stalwart.
Nela, 46, is here on the invitation of the Roma Supporters Club who are marking the Serie A club's 80th anniversary.
During a 90-minute photo session, Nela had the occasion to meet several Roma fans. They shared their memories with the former defender who was visibly impressed by their love for the Italian club.
"Meeting Roma fans is something I really enjoy," Nela told The Times.
"There is no better feeling for someone like me than to meet these people and share with them past experiences. In their words and eyes I can see that they have great esteem for what I have done for Roma and that is the best thing that can happen."
This is Nela's third visit to Malta after playing friendly matches with Italy U-21 and the country's military team in the 1980s.
Nela, who was also on the books of Napoli and Genoa before retiring in 1994, has now started a career in sports journalism at Mediaset. He has no plans of taking football management though.
"Football had taken most of my time and separated me from my family. When I retired I promised myself that I would spend as much time as possible with my wife and two daughters," Nela said.
"A coaching career is not something I am attracted to as it needs total commitment. My job as TV pundit is OK as I only work once or twice a week, travel around Europe, which I love to do, and at the same time gives me ample time for my family."
